Subhedar Storyline and Review
Shivaji Maharaj (played by Chinmay Mandlekar) and his mother (Mrinal Kulkarni) are determined to take back 23 forts from the Mughals. Shivaji promotes his loyal lieutenant Tanaji (Ajay Purkar) first to the rank of Sardar and then to Senapati. Despite preparing for his son Raiba’s (Arnav Pendharkar) wedding, Tanaji decides to lead an army of 500 soldiers to liberate the Kondhana fort from Mughal leader Udaybhan (Digvijay Rohidas) and his 1,500-strong army. Tragically, Tanaji dies while fighting Udaybhan.
Subhedar film tells the true story of Tanaji filled with patriotic sentiments. Digpal Lanjekar’s screenplay is engaging and keeps the audience’s interest. Even though the Hindi film Tanaji: The Unsung Warrior is a fast-paced story, the story keeps the audience captivated from start to finish. Digpal Lanjekar’s dialogues are also excellent.
Chinmay Mandlekar has done a wonderful job as Shivaji Maharaj. Ajay Purkar is impressive as Tanaji Malusare. Mrinal Kulkarni is heart-warming as Shivaji’s mother Aau Saheb. Digvijay Rohidas is excellent as Udaybhan. Abhijeet Swetchandra is good as Suryaji. Sameer Dharmadhikari Shelar is good as Mama. Smita Shewale has played Tanaji’s wife Savitri well. Digpal Lanjekar is remarkable as Bahiraj Naik. Nupur Daithankar is good as Shivaji Maharaj’s wife Soyrabai. Shivani Rangole has done a good job as Suryaji’s wife Yashoda. Mrinmayee Deshpande is memorable as Kesar. Aastad Kale has done a satisfactory job as Vishwas. Rishi Saxena (as Kubad Khan), Virajas Kulkarni (as Jeeva), Sunil Jadhav (as Baji Pasalkar), Dnyanesh Wadekar (as Achal Singh), and Alka Kubal (as Jana Gardin) give average support. Uma Sardeshmukh is good as Parvatibai. Master Arnav Pendharkar is fine as Raiba. Bhushan Shivtare (as Yesaji Kank), Shrikant Prabhakar (as Moropant), and Bipin Surve (as Baji Jedhe) are adequate. Rajdatt (as Shelar), Aishwarya Shidhaye (as Shelar’s daughter), Soumitra Pote (as Hiroji Indulkar), Sanket Oak (as Pilaji Neelkanth), Mandar Parlikar (as Janoji), Ajinkya Ninaware (as Rambhaji), and Poornanand Wadekar (as Navalji) fit well into their roles. Others too fit well into their roles.
Director Digpal Lanjekar has done a wonderful job of bringing this Maratha history alive. Devdutt Manisha Baji’s music is catchy and their background score makes the film even better. Songs by Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Digpal Lanjekar are excellent. Choreography by Kiran Borkar and Pankaj Chavan is worth watching. Priyanka Mayekar’s cinematography is excellent and Prashant Naik’s action scenes are thrilling. Prateek Redij’s production design is impressive and Sagar Shinde and Vinay Shinde’s editing is top notch.
