Bad Newz Review: Vicky Kaushal vs Bollywood Nostalgia

After watching the modern Dharma Productions comedy, you may find yourself thinking of Rumi’s words: “Beyond thoughts of self-reference and retro nostalgia, there is a realm. I’ll meet you there.” Jokes aside, films like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani (2023) managed to consistently play with familiar tropes. Pushes the limits with plants and pop culture references. It seems like half the screenplay depends on this. For example, Tripti Dimri’s character is called a “national crush”, Vicky Kaushal’s character is known for her “high passion”. Photo of “Manmarziyaan Ka Vicky Kaushal” and Katrina Kaif. The film humorously chronicles the fast-growing romance moving from “Yeh Ladka Hai Allah” to “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. It also refers to a lucky wife. that her husband’s violence is contrasted with a neighbor named Kabir who allegedly abuses his wife Preeti under the guise of love), and includes snippets of a song from Duplicate (1998).

The main problem with Bad News is its heavy reliance on other films. The story unfolds as a flashback in which Saloni narrates her life to Bollywood actress Ananya Pandey, who plays Saloni in the biopic. The plot uses a rare reproductive phenomenon, heteropaternal superfecundation (where twins have different fathers), to create a love triangle. Saloni Bagga played by Dimri spends the night with both her new boss Gurbir Pannu (Amy Virk) and her ex-husband Akhil Chadha (Vicky Kaushal). This subplot is significant because Dimri, who has often played sexually abused and male-dominated characters (in Bulbul, Kaala, Animal), now portrays an aspiring woman with sexual autonomy. While the film avoids slut-shaming and melodrama, it seems to make Saloni’s socially suggestive pregnancy a consequence of her choices. The progressive theme of the film feels forced.

Like the movie version of the bus in Bad News Speed (1994), you must move to avoid disaster, spouting one-liners and situational gags at breakneck speed. The film’s self-awareness and social media references can also make the best parts feel like skits. For instance, the first hour, which imagines what would happen if Rocky and Rani attend the wedding, is fascinating. Akhil behaves like a Ranveer Singh fan: charming, clumsy and the stark contrast to Saloni, a designer chef who has earned a Meraki star (the Indian equivalent of a Michelin star, where judges ask beauty pageant-like questions). Their honeymoon phase ends when Saloni discovers that Akhil is not just a mama’s boy but also a needy alpha from West Delhi who repeatedly embarrasses her with daily gifts. He also makes reactionary comments like “girls with tattoos can’t be trusted”.

After their breakup – a scene that clumsily attempts to normalize divorce – Saloni Mussoorie, a mature and sensible person, starts working at a Gujarati restaurant owned by Gurbir. When she doubts that Akhil can move on, Saloni pursues Gurbir the way Sonali Bendre pursues Shahrukh Khan in Duplicate. This part of the film is full of visual comedy and physical humor.

Vicky Kaushal’s Charm

Eventually, the tone of the film shifts to a live-action cartoon. The second half turns into a ridiculous competition between Akhil and Gurbir, which resembles a Tom and Jerry episode where they constantly try to outdo each other to win Saloni’s favour. It feels like an adult story made to appeal to children (a problem also seen in its spiritual predecessor, Good News). Ironically, when the two men fight for custody of the twins, Saloni’s screen time is reduced. If the goal is to show how men often make everything about themselves, the film doesn’t succeed. Moments of publicity, like pleading with the doctor to refer to the fetus as Baby Bagga(s) instead of Baby Chadha and Baby Pannu, seem overdone.

Vicky Kaushal’s inherent charm comes out and everything else including the other actors in the film and the film itself seems less impressive. Their joy, especially in the “Tauba Tauba” dance sequence, is infectious and has become a hit. It also serves as a marketing tool, making it less memorable to viewers than the song in the film’s end credits.

Finally, the background score deserves a mention. If the bad news were a person, he would be overwhelmed by the sound-sensitive creatures of the quiet place. The score endlessly plays comic effects that describe the action of the scene – “come follow me” to chase, “good-bye” to leave, and “H2O baby-hahaha” to sip water. While such musical cues are common in Rohit Shetty’s comedies and Dharma romcoms (such as Kal Ho Na Honi Kantaben and Rani Chatterjee’s Rocky Aur Rani), the score in Bad News is overly dull and boring.
