Is Amar Singh Chamkila Hit or Flop?

Amar Singh Chamkila received a lot of praise, especially for the brilliant performances of Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, beautiful music and Imtiaz Ali’s excellent direction. 89% of 18 critics on Rotten Tomatoes liked the film and gave it an average rating of 8/10. The story and the way Chamkila’s life was portrayed impressed both audiences and critics.

The film was very popular on Netflix, garnering 2.4 million views in its opening weekend from April 12 to April 14. These strong viewership numbers show that the film was a huge hit with audiences.

Amar Singh Chamkila Movie Plot

Grammy Award winner AR Rahman is composing music for a new film. He is working with lyricist Irshad Kamil. This is his second collaboration with director Imtiaz Ali after nine years. They last worked together in a film named Tamasha. Two songs from the film have already been released – Ishq Mitaye and Naram Kalja – and people have liked them.

Diljit and Parineeti have sung some old catchy songs in Punjabi for this film. He recorded the songs live on location, meaning he sang them while filming at actual locations. He will be shown singing at these places in the film.

Director Imtiaz Ali says the film talks about musicians who break the rules of society. These musicians often face success but sometimes tragic ends. The film celebrates the life of an artiste who loved music so much and never gave it up.

Amar Singh Chamkila will be available on Netflix India from April 12. It is a film that tells a story about the passion of music and artists.

Amar Singh Chamkila Movie Storyline

The story of Chamkila begins with her tragic end. On 8 March 1988, in the village of Mehsampur in Punjab, Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot Kaur (played by Parineeti Chopra) arrive for a demonstration. As soon as Amarjot got out of his gray Ambassador car, he was shot in the head. Chamkila (played by Diljit Dosanjh) is also shot, lying on the ground with a rifle pointed at his face. As he lies there, the scene changes to a sepia-tone flashback, showing glimpses of his early life. We see her watching a couple fight over an affair and getting slapped by her mother because of her curiosity about sex. In another scene, the women’s mothers clap while singing about marital bliss at a wedding. These brief, blurry images (captured by cinematographer Sylvester Fonseca) hint at Chamkila’s formative years. But as soon as Mohit Chauhan’s song ‘Bajaa’ starts, the film moves forward rapidly, which shows that there is a lot to cover in a short time.

While Chamkila and Amarjot’s bodies were awaiting cremation, their story was told by friends and critics in a single night. The storytelling follows a familiar pattern. Chamkila gets her big break when her teacher, a famous singer, is late for a show. Chamkila’s raw and relatable songs quickly become popular, but this also makes her enemies. However, the jealous musicians, moral critics, and militants who oppose him are only briefly mentioned.

The 1984 rebellion in Punjab is mostly shown in the background. The characters are shown to be wary of militants, but this is not explored in depth. The film uses graphic-novel-style animation and vintage footage to create a vibrant, pop-culture experience, focusing more on the time period than glitz. His story seems more like the events happening around him than his personal experiences.

Review of Amar Singh Chamkila

Diljit Dosanjh plays Chamkila with a charming softness that suits the role perfectly, especially while performing Chamkila’s songs on stage. However, Amarjot’s character is not explored much and Parineeti Chopra’s acting is adequate but lacks depth.

AR Rahman’s music with lyrics by Irshad Kamil has given life to the film. “Tu Kya Jaane” plays slowly during the romantic scenes between Amarjot and Chamkila, while “Ishq Mitaye” provides energy when the film slows down. “Naaram Kalja”, although lively, seems out of place in the story and works better as a music video.

Director Ali’s first attempt at a biopic sometimes prioritizes factual accuracy over storytelling, making parts of the film feel slow. Since the climax is shown at the beginning, the straightforward plot doesn’t offer many surprises. The film shines in the quieter moments, like when a tune hums on a shiny car or when villagers hide in fear. These scenes are more impressive than the entire story. A friend described the film as a basket of colorful flowers, each with its own fragrance. I was hoping to get a unique rose in the mix.
