Furosa: A Mad Max Saga is a 2024 Australian action movie set in a post-apocalyptic world. Directed and produced by George Miller, the film is the fifth installment in the Mad Max series and serves as both a prequel and spin-off to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Anya Taylor-Joy and Ella Brown play younger versions of the main character, Furiosa, originally played by Charlize Theron. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.
This story takes place 15 to 20 years before the events of Fury Road. It is set in a harsh Australian desert where combatants battle for the last remaining resources such as water, food, weapons and gasoline. The film follows Furiosa’s life from where she is kidnapped by the warlock Dementus, played by Hemsworth, on a quest for revenge following the loss of her mother. For years, he survives as a slave and eventually becomes a trusted lieutenant of the Citadel’s leader, Immortan Joe, played by Lachie Hulme. Tom Burke plays Joe’s military commander, Praetorian Jack.
Miller originally planned to shoot Furiosa immediately after Fury Road, but development issues and salary negotiations with Warner Bros. Pictures delayed the project. Despite this delay, some of the main crew members of Fury Road returned to Furosa. They included composer Tom Holkenborg, costume designer Jenny Beavan, editor Margaret Sixel (who is also Miller’s wife), and screenwriter Nico Latoris. Filming took place from June to October 2022 in Australia.
Furiosa aims to tell a detailed story of how the main character evolves from a captured girl to a powerful warrior. With intense action scenes, deep character development and a unique look at the Mad Max world, Furosa: A Mad Max Saga promises to be an exciting addition to the series.
