Review of Gangs of Godavari

Set in the late 1990s in a Lanka village near Kovvuru, Lankala tells the story of Ratnakar (played by Vishwak Sen), a passionate young man deeply connected to the traditions of the Godavari region. Raised amid the echoes of ‘Katti Kattadam’, a tradition of revenge through violence, Ratnakar emerged as a leading figure determined to bring about change.

The story revolves around Ratnakar’s relationships: his romantic involvement with Ratna (Anjali), a prostitute who aims to help him, and his unrequited love for Bujji (Neha Shetty), the daughter of Nanaji (Nasar), a powerful local politician. Using his connections with Nanaji and Doraswami Raju (Goparaju Ramana), Ratnakar cunningly uses these connections to become a legislator.

As Ratnakar rises in politics, tensions rise. Doraswamy Raju’s son Chinna Dora and Nanaji’s group conspire against him, testing his cunning and determination. The story explores these power struggles, village politics and the fading tradition of ‘katti kattadam’.

While Vishwak Sen performs strongly as Ratnakar, capturing the essence of the determined young man from the Godavari, the film’s authenticity sometimes fails to convey regional accents and emotional depth. Anjali and Neha Shetty give decent performances, but the impact of their characters on the audience is limited.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s “Adala Vonila” stands out for enhancing key moments on screen. However, other songs in the film fail to leave a lasting impression. The cinematography, known for its visual richness, is a technical highlight.

Despite its promising premise, “Gangs of Godavari” struggles with narrative coherence and fails to engage the audience fully. The film tries to emulate the horror storytelling seen in recent hits like “Pushpa” and “Rangasthalam”, but falls short in delivering a coherent and engaging narrative.

At its core, “Gangs of Godavari” explores the clash between tradition and modernity, symbolizing Ratnakar’s mission to end ‘katti kattadam’. However, the execution lacks the depth needed to resonate with viewers, leaving the story disjointed and the characters’ motivations underdeveloped.

In summary, while “Gangs of Godavari” presents multiple storylines and dramatic events, its narrative fails to come together as a compelling whole. The film starts well but ends in a way that leaves the audience wanting more continuity and emotional connection.
