Gran Turismo is a 2023 American biographical sports drama movie directed by Neill Blomkamp, with a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Balin. Produced by Columbia Pictures, PlayStation Productions and 2.0 Entertainment, the film is based on the Gran Turismo video game series created by Polyphony Digital. It tells the true story of Jane Mardenborough, a British teenager who played Gran Turismo and became a professional race car driver. The film stars Archie Madkaway as Mardenborough alongside David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnett, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou.
The idea for a Gran Turismo movie was first announced in July 2013, with Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti set to produce and Alex Tse writing the script. Initially, Joseph Kosinski was set to direct in June 2015 with a new script by John and Eric Hober. However, this version did not go ahead until February 2018. Development resumed in May 2022, with Blomkamp confirmed as director in June. The main cast was announced in September 2022, with additional cast members joining in November. Filming began in Hungary in November 2022 and ended in December. The film’s music was composed by Lorne Balfe and Andrew Kawczynski.
Gran Turismo premiered on July 30, 2023 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and was released in US theaters on August 25, 2023 by Sony Pictures Releasing. It grossed $122 million worldwide on a $60 million budget and received positive reviews for Blomkamp’s direction and racing scenes, although some critics cited problems with the script and the depiction of Mardenborough’s crash at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
