The film was first announced in April 2019 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other commitments made by Suriya and Shiva. It was relaunched as Surya 42 in August 2022. Filming began that month and ended in January 2024, taking seventeen months. The film was shot in various locations including Chennai, Goa, Kerala, Kodaikanal and Rajahmundry. The film has music composed by Devi Sri Prasad, cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy and editing by Nishad Yusuf. With a budget of around ₹300–350 crore, Kanguva is one of the most expensive Indian films of all time.
Kanguva is slated to release on 10 October 2024, during the festival of Dussehra, and will be available in standard, 3D and IMAX formats.
