Sarfaraz Khan Biography
Sarfaraz Khan, a talented young cricketer from Mumbai, rose to fame at the age of 17. He started playing cricket under the guidance of his father Naushad Khan, a former Mumbai cricketer and respected coach who trained players like Iqbal Abdullah and Kamran Khan. Known for his unique and creative batting style, Sarfaraz made his first-class debut in 2014 and played in the Under-19 World Cup for India in 2014 and 2016.
Sarfaraz first caught attention when he scored 439 runs in his first Harris Shield match in 2009. He was just 12 years old and broke the record set by Sachin Tendulkar in 1988. His brilliant performance earned him a place in the Mumbai Under-19 team and later the India Under-19 team.
Batting in the middle order, Sarfaraz scored 566 runs in the Under-19 World Cup at an average of 70.75. Only Eoin Morgan (606 runs) and Babar Azam (585 runs) have scored more runs than him. He also holds the record for most fifties in the Under-19 World Cup, with seven fifties in two tournaments.
However, Sarfraz’s career has had some controversies. He was suspended by the Mumbai Cricket Association for lying about his age, although his actual age was later confirmed in a Test. He was also expelled from the MCA’s indoor academy camp for poor behaviour. His match fees were withheld for the 2014-15 season for making obscene gestures to selectors after an Under-19 match. After the 2014-15 season, Sarfraz moved from Mumbai to Uttar Pradesh.
His time in Uttar Pradesh remained uneventful, so he returned to Mumbai for the 2019-20 season. This was the time he really showed his mettle. In the next two seasons, he scored over 900 runs in each Ranji season, becoming only the third player to do so after Wasim Jaffer and Ajay Sharma. Sarfraz started out as a youngster and became a strong force in domestic cricket. Although he has had limited opportunities at the higher level, Sarfraz has been performing consistently well and is aiming to reach the next level.
