Trap was released in the United States on August 2, 2024 by Warner Bros. Pictures. This is Shyamalan’s second film distributed by Warner Bros., the first being Lady in the Water in 2006. Also his move from Universal Pictures, which had distributed his last five films, starting with The Visit in 2015. Universal originally planned to release Trap on April 5, 2024, but in 2023, Warner Bros. Acquired and the release date moved to August 2, 2024. Then they postponed it until August 9 before finally settling on August 2.
The film premiered on July 24, 2024 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. It was not shown to critics before its theatrical release. In terms of marketing, RelishMix described the social media buzz as “mixed-positive”, while Deadline Hollywood noted that despite low awareness, interest in the film was high, similar to the response to Longlegs earlier in the year. The film’s social media content garnered 259.2 million impressions across various platforms, 47 percent higher than usual for films of the first installment genre.
