Story
The film ‘Vazai’ is based in a small village in the south. It follows a young boy named Shivanandan who goes to school and also works in the banana fields to support his family. The story explores his struggles with poverty, friendship and upbringing, as Shivanendhan faces the harsh realities of village life and social issues that challenge his judgement.
Release Date
Vaazhai was released in theaters on 23 August 2024. Tamil films are usually released on OTT platforms 30 to 45 days after their theatrical release. However, this may change depending on how well the movie does in theaters, dealing with streaming platforms and the overall distribution plan.
Movie Plot
The story is set in 1999 and follows a boy named Shivanaina, who lives in Puliyankulam with his mother and sister. Shivanaina is known for being a bit mischievous, but is also very smart and always does well in school, often topping her class.
During the school holidays, Shivanaina’s mother wants her to work as a banana carrier to help her family, as they struggle with poverty and debt. However, Shivnaina does not want to do this.
Kaleras working for banana traders raised their wages to Rs. Shivnaina tries to convince him by offering to do it. 1 and challenges him with a math problem. After some reluctance, the merchant paid Rs. 1 per banana, and the story goes from there.
Despite some “Tamil-film compromises”, #MariSelvaraj’s #Vaazhai is a work of terrifying cinematic beauty. The buildup to the climax is simply extraordinary – one of the best passages of cinema I have seen in recent times. #VaazhaiReview @galattaplusofflhttps://t.co/iUwSjVlveL

Film Analysis
Director Mari Selvaraj has done an excellent job of portraying the hardships he faced as a child through this film. Shivanaina’s character really makes us feel the struggle that Mari Selvaraj wants to share.
Nikhila Vimal plays a teacher, who reminds us of our own school days. The playful moments between Shekhar and Shivnaina, like when they mimic Rajni and Kamal, are particularly memorable.
The screenplay is very well done, especially the ending, which leaves a strong impression. All the actors give great performances, with no weak points.
Cinematography and editing make the film more impressive. Santosh Narayanan’s music adds life to Mari Selvaraj’s scenes, helping to convey the emotions and pain that the director wants to convey through his story.
