Ghoomer has good intentions. It is not a story of pity, but of wisdom and strength. The film is not trying to make you feel sorry for a woman who loses her right hand; instead, it is about her courage to fight back. However, despite its good intentions, the film does not delve deeply into the characters or the story.
The plot asks you to believe a lot, especially during the climax. The focus is entirely on Anina’s bowling skills, ignoring the importance of teamwork in the final scenes. It does not create the emotional impact it hopes for. Unlike ‘Chak De’, which emphasised on teamwork, Ghoomer falls short in this aspect.
The screenplay does not impress the audience. The film begins with the chanting of Ghoomer in the stadium, but before you can get into it, the story goes back to Anina’s past. The first 45 minutes are spent setting up Anina’s story, but Kher, despite her efforts, struggles to hold attention, especially in scenes that show vulnerability.
Saiyaami Kher deserves praise for getting the technical aspects of her character right. Her knowledge of cricket helps her portray the game accurately, and she portrays the physical challenges of a man who has lost one of his arms well.
Abhishek Bachchan shines as Paddy. His comic timing, body language and dialogue delivery perfectly depict a man who has something to prove. He gives his best in his role, well supported by the impressive Shabana Azmi as Anina’s grandmother. Azmi has a strong presence, though her character doesn’t have much to do in the second half.
Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo is a pleasant addition. The music complements the emotions well. The film has Balki’s usual mix of humor and emotional moments. But even with a strong supporting cast, a film can only do so much when the core elements like the writing, screenplay and acting aren’t strong.
Anina, played by Saiyami Kher, is a talented cricketer who loses her right arm a few days before her first match for India against England. Padam Singh Sodhi aka Paddy, played by Abhishek Bachchan, is a retired Test cricketer who never found his right place after suffering a rib injury in 1995. Together, they aim to set new records and prove themselves.
