Saba Nayagan Movie Review and Storyline
Imagine you are out with a colleague and they bump into an old friend from school or college. As they meet, share funny memories, failed love stories, drunken adventures and classroom antics, you nod politely and smile at the awkward situation. If you find their stories funny, you too might join in the laughter. But if not, you might feel like you are watching “Saba Nayakan” is a film that only evokes fond memories.
The story revolves around Arvind, also known as Saba, who gets caught by the police after drinking alcohol. To get their sympathy, he tells stories of his many romantic failures in school and college. The police are so engrossed that they listen eagerly wondering if he will ever find his soulmate. Tamil cinema often features a hero dealing with many romantic misadventures during school and college. These are experiences many of us can relate to. So, what went wrong in “Saba Nayakan”? The main issues are its humor and screenplay.
The film has some laughs, but mostly, its humor tests your patience. You can understand the jokes from a distance, from cues like the music and exaggerated acting. Comedy feels like someone trying to sing a song in a language he doesn’t understand – an honest attempt, but more imitation than reality. While humor is subjective, a screenplay should be the solid foundation of a film. Unfortunately, “Saba Nayagan” has a flat, two-dimensional screenplay.
The film starts abruptly, drags, and then ends just as abruptly. The central conflict, which should drive the story, never comes to the fore. Though we know Arvind wants to find love, we never understand why he loves a woman. The screenplay shows every heartbreak in a cursory way, so we never see how these relationships shape Arvind. Supporting characters get too much screen time, which slows down the pace and weakens Arvind’s character and his pursuit of romantic interests. These issues could have been fixed with better script editing.
Ashok Selvan, who plays Arvind, may not look like a schoolboy, but he makes up for it with his acting. His facial expressions effectively depict the character’s growth from a naive teenager to a confident young man and eventually an adult determined to find love. What works in favour of “Saba Nayagan” is its simple story of Arvind’s search for love as he grows up. It is also refreshing that the film is set in Erode and Coimbatore rather than Chennai or Madurai. The straightforward screenplay makes it a harmless viewing experience. The film promises very little and delivers just that. With a coherent premise, the director chose to play it safe. But sometimes, playing it too safe can be almost as risky as taking a big gamble.
