Murder In Mahim Season 1 Review, Storyline, Plot
Murder in Mahim is a thrilling investigative drama that keeps the audience engrossed with its intricate storyline. The series is very watchable, with suspense that lasts till the end.
The show doesn’t just focus on solving crimes; It also sheds light on the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community. It shows discrimination and exclusion, revealing the prejudices that society holds. The story portrays the struggle and stigma experienced by these individuals.
The show also depicts the complex bond between family relationships, especially between a father and his son. A retired journalist struggles with his own emotions when he suspects his son may be gay, highlighting themes of acceptance and understanding within the family.
Based on Jerry Pinto’s novel, Murder in Mahim follows Shivajirao Jende (played by Vijay Raaz), a committed police officer investigating a series of murders of youth from the LGBTQ community in Mumbai’s Mahim area. All the crimes are connected by a solitary toilet at Mahim railway station. Jende makes progress in the case with the help of Firdaus Rabbani (played by Shivani Raghuvanshi) but is thrown out by a new murder. In need of help, Jande turns to Peter Fernandes (played by Ashutosh Rana), a retired crime reporter who has a troubled past with Jande’s father. As Peter struggles with his feelings about his own son’s sexuality, the investigation takes an unexpected turn, forcing Jande and his team to confront their own biases in the pursuit of justice.
Each episode is around 40 minutes long and maintains a fast pace to keep viewers engaged. The series is full of twists and turns, making the story engaging from start to finish. The realistic portrayal of the father-son relationship between Vijay Raaz and Shivaji Satam’s characters is particularly moving, capturing the essence of a middle-class family.
The acting of the cast is the main strength of the series. Vijay Raaz shines as Shivajirao Jende, portraying the inner struggle of a policeman facing difficult odds. Ashutosh Rana adds authenticity with his understated performance, while Shivani Raghuvanshi’s nuanced performance as Firdaus Rabbani elevates the show. Rajesh Khattar also plays the role of Leslie Sequeira.
The series highlights the current challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, showing that despite the repeal of Article 377, significant change is still needed. Depicting a Mumbai station toilet as a supposed ‘safe space’ raises important questions about social acceptance.
However, the series has some drawbacks. For instance, Peter Fernandes’ sudden appearance for an interview feels out of place and unrealistic. Also, the plot gets sidetracked by focusing on a knife attached to a character unrelated to the murder, which can distract viewers.
Despite these issues, Murder in Mahim excels with its fast pace, engaging mystery and exploration of human relationships, making it a compelling watch.
